Don’t Make This Mistake with Text Marketing

You’re being too general. (Mic Drop)
Ok, but seriously. That’s literally the biggest mistake. You’re trying to reach everyone, so your message is too general and you’re marketing to no one.
When you market to everyone you’re not addressing anyone’s specific need for that product or service. Everyone has different pain points, life experience, or interests, and you have different products or services that can be used to address each. Even better, once you start to be more deliberate in your messaging, you can use Tags in Project Broadcast to easily organize who you are messaging.
Be deliberate in WHO you are messaging so you can better focus on HOW you are messaging.
Slay at Home Mom versus Retiree. Your non profit has a carnival coming up. You have two main groups who volunteer. Slay at Home moms (credit for that name to @theclairenecessities) and Retirees.
Different seasons of life with possibly different interests lead to different messaging
Example for SAHM:
Hi {{firstName}}, we have a new event coming up this Spring! We are hosting a carnival to raise funds for our local domestic abuse shelter. Kris and I will have our Nursery and Youth staff handling childcare for anyone who volunteers. Can you attend our Carnival committee meeting on…..
Here I’m identifying with the pain point of needing childcare in order to volunteer for my SAHM
Example for Retiree:
Hi {{firstName}}, we have a new event coming up this Spring! We are hosting a carnival to raise funds for our local domestic abuse shelter. Kris and I would love for you to share your experiences from previous carnivals. We will also have openings to volunteer at booths or contribute to our bake sale. Can you attend our Carnival committee meeting on…..
Here I’m focusing on the fact that they have previous life experience in these matters and giving them options on how they want to volunteer
Different points in your customers journey can be defined by your specific goals for the relationship.
Creating tags in Project Broadcast keeps your contacts organized. A contact can have multiple tags. Even better, when someone opts in with one of your keywords, they get tagged!
There are all sorts of examples of needing an organizational tool like tags:
- Active versus inactive customers
- New students versus returning students
- Staff
- Attendees
- Type of volunteers
- Products purchase
- Pain points
Using tags in Project Broadcast helps you determine who you are addressing so you can tailor one piece of content to that specific group. How are you using tags?
